Hershey Park!

If you’ve ever been to Hersheypark, you probably have "sweet" memories. If you've never been to Hersheypark, what are you waiting for?  Now you can have thrilling memories too with the addition of Hershey’s newest roller coaster, "Great Bear." Great Bear joins the park’s all time favorite roller coasters; SooperDooperLooper, Wildcat, Sidewinder and Comet. This new, state-of-the-art inverted roller coaster boasts two rolls, a loop, a drop, an "S" turn, an Immelman. It travels at speeds up to 58 mph and cost a mere $13 million to construct. The park officially starts its 1998 season on May 23. When Milton S. Hershey built Hershey Park at the turn of the century, I wonder if he envisioned that Hersheypark would provide an evolving playground offering thrilling as well as relaxing rides, stage and animal shows, and terrific memories. Adjoining the park and opened year round, Zoo America features animals native to North America. By the way, you wouldn’t want to miss Hershey's Chocolate World (open daily).

Another must see, especially if you currently reside in PA, used to live in PA, or heck, even if you never intend to live in PA, is our State Capitol Building. The building’s Italian Renaissance design was modeled after St. Peter’s in Rome, and is absolutely breathtaking. In fact, at the building’s dedication in 1906, Teddy Roosevelt described it as, "the handsomest building I ever saw". (and he ought to know!) This landmark has been featured in main stream movies and will definitely be the topic of conversation when you reminisce of your visit to PA. Guided tours are available Mon.,-Sat. year-round.

Across from the capitol building is the State Museum of Pennsylvania. In addition to the treasures, fine art, artifacts and antiques found inside, the museum holds its juried art exhibit and festival in May. And for you stargazers, there is also a planetarium. The museum is closed on Mondays and admission is free!

For a relaxing afternoon, many cross the Susquehanna River on the Walnut Street Walking Bridge and head to City Island. City Island offers vast sports facilities, shady picnic areas, a marina, miniature steam train, miniature golf, concerts, Harrisburg Senators baseball, and even a paddlewheel boat, "Pride of the Susquehanna," on which rides are available May-Oct.

Enjoy!
