Chuggin’ Along in Pennsylvania

With all the hustle and bustle in life, do you feel like you’re just chugging along to the same routine? Why not take a diversion with romantic memories of an earlier day, when life was simpler and there were frontiers to explore. Pennsylvania offers many tourist railroads and railroad museums to help you take your diversion.

Whether you’re "into" trains or not, you can still enjoy some time visiting some of America’s old iron horses. Many old railroad cars have been turned into something other than that for which they were originally designed. In Dushore, Sullivan County, for example some of the merchants have converted old railroad cars or trolleys into a unique setting for their establishments. They claim, "Once one of the leading railroad towns in the area we offer a little bit of history and a heck of a lot of charm."

If you have kids, or want to feel like a kid yourself, a train can bring out the child in most of us. Or, if just seeing or riding a train doesn’t do it for you, why not visit the National Toy Train Museum or The Choo Choo Barn, both in Strasburg, Lancaster County.

You say you don’t like to do things on a grand scale? Well, how about H or O Scale? In the east The Choo Choo barn offers a glimpse of Lancaster County in miniature. Almost anyone would enjoy watching the trains operating, the animated scenes, and seeing all the heritage of the area in miniature. Or if you’re in the western part of the state, you could visit The Miniature Railroad and Village at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh. Here you’ll find hundreds of different scenes, more than 2,000 hand painted characters, and nearly 100 lifelike animations.

There are many museums throughout the state for you to visit; Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Washington PA, Locomotion Commotion at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, Reading Railroad Museum in Reading, The Youngwood Historical and Railroad Museum in Youngwood, and many more.

With all of this railroading are you getting hungry yet? Many operating tourist railroads offer unique dining experiences. New Hope & Ivyland Railroad in Bucks County has Special Dinner and Brunch trains available. The Northern Central Railway in New Freedom offers the dinner train "Liberty Limited", operating every weekend. The Bellefonte Historical Railroad, in Centre County, has Ride -n- Dine trains between Bellefonte and Restaurants at other locations along the railroad and are operated the last Friday of each month from January through October. The Historic Strasburg Rail Road, in Lancaster County has the Lee E. Brenner Dining Car, the only operating wooden dining coach in America today where you can enjoy lunch aboard one of the regularly scheduled hourly trains, or experience a truly unique dining experience on their Dinner Train.

Well, if I’ve got you hungering for a taste of the past, check out some of the some of the railroad spots we’ve listed in the sidebar.

All aboard!
