Here's something I've been thinking about doing for a little while. Every Saturday morning, I'll post various RV and camping news from around the country. Hopefully it's just something to enjoy reading. Maybe I'll talk to the higher ups about a new area for these. Thanks to Chuck Woodbury for letting me repost these. Let me know if you like this idea or not.

-The U.S. Forest Service reminds recreationists that their lands will be "fee free" on January 21 in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

-Dubbed by one newspaper as "Traffic Cone Killing 101," Guaranty RV is offering a free RV driving school through this weekend at the Lane County Fairgrounds in Eugene, Oregon.

-Sussex County, Delaware officials are mulling over a proposal for a new RV resort between Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. If approved, the 162-acre site would provide 451 RV sites in addition to tent and cabin spaces, swimming pools, a canoe outfitter and more.

-The oldest continuously operating theme park in the U.S., Lake Compounce, in Bristol, Connecticut, wants to add an RV park. If approvals are granted, the new park could open with 100 RV sites with space for cabins and tents as early as Spring, 2014.

-Elkhart County, Indiana, RV manufacturing capital of the U.S., added 2,700 new jobs in 2012. The average wage in the county is $18.01.

Tidbits for 1/19/13:

-In a move that could cause RVers gas pains, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has called on government to raise the federal gas tax. Thomas Donohue says it's time to, "quit fooling around" and raise taxes to support infrastructure improvements

-Winnebago says it will 'rocket' its way out of "survival mode" and into expansion. CEO Randy Potts told a newspaper reporter the company is planning on increasing its advertising and will also expand into building transit busses.

-A Pennsylvania man who suffered a stoke, had to undergo rehabilitation, and then had no place to live has caught a break from Greenwich Township officials. A local resident offered the man an RV to live in on the site of a former garage and local officials decided to allow it until he can find another place to live.
note from mikhen...this is in Berks County, not far from Cabelas..link to news article. Reading Eagle

-An RVer attempting to back up his Class C motorhome backed a bit-to-far and ended up in a canal near Dania Beach, Florida. The unidentified RVer was not hurt, but the same can't be said for the rig.

Tidbits for 1/26/13

-The year 2012 goes down in Airstream's book as its best year ever. Sales for the sleek trailer-and-motorhome builder were up 16 percent from 2011, led by a 28 percent increase in Class B motorhome sales. Airstream has been in business for 81 years.

-KOA is looking for workkampers, and says it has scheduled a Work Kamper Boot Camp for March 20 in Branson, Missouri. Work Kamper members can attend free, non-members pay $20 but get a night of camping and free lunch. Learn More.

-Retail sales of towable RVs last November were flat — up less than one percent compared to the same month in 2011. Worst hit, park model sales were down nearly 35 percent, followed by pop-up sales, down 19 percent. Source: Statistical Surveys Inc.

-MARIETTA, Ohio -- So many recreational vehicles owned by those working in the oil and gas industry were parked at the Washington County fairgrounds from November 2011 to May 2012 that the Washington County Fair Board was required to declare the fairground's main parking lot a RV park, reports the Parkersburg News. In a licensing and permit process that started in October 2011 and was completed recently, former fair board member Bonnie Gill, current fair board member Frank Tucker and other fair board members worked to complete all necessary steps in the process, the news article says. Now that all permits, licenses and insurance have been received for the Washington County Midway RV Park near the fairground's main entrance, the Parkersburg News says the area can be used in multiple ways: as a RV park, parking lot and a midway for fair concessions, according to Gill.

-William and Mary K. Weiss of North Huntingdon, Pa. already had plans to camp more this year with the RV they purchased in 2012 at Clems’s Trailer Sales. They just never dreamed that after receiving $800 of free camping in 2012 with the purchase of that RV that they’d wind up winning another $500 of free camping for 2013 too! The Weiss family was recently named the winners of the fourth annual Very Special Camper Contest (VSC), sponsored by participating campgrounds and RV dealers in western Pennsylvania.

News from the weird
-A Victoria, Texas man had a really bad day recently: Convinced people were shooting at him, James Holt was arrested for firing his shotgun at the drug-inspired phantom shooters in his RV, and in the process evidently catching the RV's curtains on fire.

And Last But Not Least
-The Eastern Sports and Outdoors show slated to start February 2nd, in Harrisburg, Pa, has been postponed indefinitely. The promoter was forced to do so after hundreds of vendors, sponsors, and celebrities boycotted the show, after the announcement was made banning certain items from the show. A grass roots effort was started by Tom and Chas from MyNortheastOutdoors. The Facebook Page "Boycott The ESOS" went viral, and the rest is history.
As a result, and to help out the boycotting vendors, MyNEOD will launch a Virtual Outdoor Show on February 2nd. The virtual show will feature classified ads from the boycotting vendors. The classifieds will be found at www.myneoclassifieds.com

Tidbits for 2/2/2013

-Gulfport, Florida lawmakers are giving 50 RV owners what they consider a break. City law imposes property setbacks that the RVers can't meet when parking their rigs. Rather than erase the law, the city is allowing current owners who can't comply to apply for a variance but leaving the setbacks in place for future RV owners.mikhen's note...this is something to remember in case this happens where you live

-The year 2012 was the RV industry's best year since 2008, growing more than 13 percent in sales. So says the RV Industry Association.

-Start-up RV builder Grand Design Recreational Vehicles says it has delivered its first RV. The "Solitude" fifth-wheel went to an Anniston, Alabama dealer. Grand Design will also produce travel trailers and toy haulers.

-Nearly 100 homeowners in a Millsboro, Delaware mobile home park are worried they'll be homeless if park owners have their way. A proposal to turn Massey's Landing into a 575 site RV park could mean the mobile homes would go. Park owners say that such moves would be far into the future.

-Rod Livingston the inventor of Dry-Flush, a waterless toilet for RVs, says his firm has built nearly 300 of the units and sold almost 200. About being an inventor, Livingston says, "you just sort of get < UH OH ! - Censored > into it." We hope that doesn't happen with his invention.

-If you ever thought that in the world of propane cylinders, "There's nothing new under the sun," think again. How about an LP cylinder made, not from steel or aluminum, but from plastic and fiberglass? Sound a bit wild? Hang on, there's a company that sells them, and you might just want to consider them. See it here.

News from the weird
-When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a
Seattle street by s ucking on a hose, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline, but he plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had and the perp had been punished enough! puke

Virtual Sportsman Show
-The show is now open. Find it here.

Tidbits for 2/9/2013

-New Orleans RV parks say the Super Bowl brought prosperity in the form of filled up sites this last weekend. Parks reported being packed to capacity with long waiting lists for a cancellation.

-Protect All, Inc., maker of RV cleaning products, has garnered two Readers' Choice awards. Trailer Life and Motorhome magazine readers voted the company tops in the cleaning and protection consumer product category.

-While Punxsutawney Phil tells East Coasters when spring is coming, the West relies on Mojave Maxine, a desert tortoise who lives at the Living Desert center near Palm Springs, California. So far Maxine hasn't yet poked her head out of her burrow – spring has yet to arrive.

-CAMP HILL, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania RV & Camping Association (PRVCA) has announced the release of the 2013 edition of Explore Pennsylvania. The official PRVCA membership directory and consumer magazine features 52 pages of RV and camping tips designed to give consumers the latest information in RV trends as well as promote PRVCA members, the PRVCA said today. Tidbits for 2/16/2013

-Lewes, Delaware residents are noisily protesting a proposed 516-site RV park on Love Creek. At a recent zoning commission hearing, 110 people testified against the RV park plan, while none spoke in favor. The county council will take up the topic February 19.

-New Philadelphia, Ohio has no law on the books prohibiting people from living in RVs on private property — not yet, anyway. But the city council has asked a study be done on the issue, now that it has learned some in the city are doing it.

-The 2013 Pennsylvania Adventure RV Expo will be held Feb. 21-24 at the Blair County Convention Center in Altoona. A portion of all show proceeds will be donated to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

- The NPS Digest notes: "For the National Park Service, the 112th Congress, which was in session over 2011 and 2012, was notable more for what was not accomplished than what was. In a departure from all other sessions in recent memory, the two-year Congress that ended on January 3rd did not authorize any new national park units, national heritage areas, wild and scenic rivers, national trails, wilderness areas, or studies of potential new designations.

-The Newmar Corporation advanced its giving to the RV Learning Center this week, donating $25,000 for the 2013 Annual Campaign, the RVDA announced today. To date, Newmar has donated $160,000 toward its overall pledge amount of $260,000. The RV Learning Center kicked off its FY13 fundraiser in October. Donations are necessary to fund the Learning Center’s many educational programs, designed specifically for RV dealership personnel. Emerging technology has transformed education and training, so donations to the RV Learning Center enable it to utilize leading technologies to maintain high standards while keeping training affordable and relevant for dealers and their staff, according to a press release from RVDA.

-3 new KOA's in Pennsylvania. Honesdale/Poconos KOA, Butler North KOA, and Jonestown KOA. mikhen's note...The new Jonestown KOA was formerly Lickdale Campground. The old Jonestown KOA is now just Jonestown Campground. Confusing but accurate.
