When do most people in central PA consider UN-winterizing, ie opening the camper and using it? What would be a safe bet ? end of April ? End of March ? Probably not a good idea to use it for opening day of trout , huhh ??

My boss unwinterized this past weekend. He races modifieds and this weekend is his first race.
We won't undo until our first trip near the end of April.
In my opinion, for damage to be done this late in the season, we would have to have a del freeze for a few days.
Trout opening day here is March 31. We've already camped un unpinked by then.

You can still use the camper. Just don't use the water, or drains.
Most campgrounds open Easter weekend. Facilities should be open also.
If you would use them, just drain them well afterward.
Lerch probably has good info on this.

not sure how you winterized but it sounds like antifreeze in the lines,I blow my lines out and can be winterized in 10mins.I would have no problem using my camper then rewinterizing if need be.

We blow our lines out with a compressor too...winterizes and unwinterizes in a few minutes! We are heading out for our first trip (Rehoboth then ferry to Cape May for Easter) next weekend, March 23nd - March 31st. Winterizing this way, our RV is always ready to go when a nice weekend presents itself!

The best rule of them is to un-winterize when the temperature is going to stay above freezing. A night or two that dips below freezing, should not cause you any issues. As long as the day time temps are above freezing. We have customer who have already un-winterized and are ready to go camping. The units that we are sending out, are still winterized. This winter has been a cold one, and is still hanging on the back of Spring.

On a side note, when winterizing an RV that is still under a factory warranty. Please be sure to confirm with the RV's manufacturer if antifreeze is the required way to winterize. In some instances customer can void their warranty by using the compressed air method, which being compressed air has water moisture. So you are still introducing water into the lines. Plus utilizing the compressed air method, you are taking a remote chance of damaging your fittings. Just some things to think about.

Thats really good advice, thanks! We use the pink stuff, its what Lerch recommended and sells so that is what we did....Last year we used the camper in late april for the first time after winter but that was because we had nowhere to go before then. This year, I was thinking on taking it out for first day of trout, but ...I dunno...

I have a question about the best way to get the antifreeze out of the hot water tank and the fresh water tank. The previous owners put it both places. I really want to get it out of there I know one of the older campers we had it came to us that way and I had a hard time getting the smell out of the lines.

About all you can do Grizzly is flush flush and more flush until the pink stuff is gone,Thats the reason I switched to blowing my lines out, got tired of dealing with the pink in my lines every year.By all means like Lerch said is follow manufactures rules while under warranty but if done correctly(drain compressor and use no more then 50 psi) there is no way you will have problems by blowing the lines out.And it's so nice to not have to deal with the pink stuff in the system every year.

I'm addition to flush, flush, flush, here is an excerpt from an article. This way is better than household bleach.

A friend and fellow full time RVer, Bill Randolph told me how he uses something other than household bleach which works well for him and I also started using it. I think it is worth passing on to you. Before he retired, Bill spent twenty years in the swimming pool business. He's an expert when it comes to sanitizing swimming pools and spas and says the same rules apply to RV fresh water systems.

Bill uses Chlorinating Concentrate (Sodium Dichloro-s-Triazinetricone or Sodium Dichlor for short). Sodium Dichlor contains 62% available chlorine. Compare that to household bleach which has something close to 3%. One pound of Sodium Dichlor is equal to 8 gallons of bleach! Also, household bleach contains other stuff, including a lot of salt, and that salt and other stuff is what causes the bad taste and why you have to flush the fresh water tank so well.

Bill says it takes only 1 teaspoon of the concentrate per 100 gallons of water to initially sanitize the system. Remember to run water through all the faucets. It's okay to use the full teaspoon even on smaller tanks because you will be flushing the tank before adding the water you intend to drink but it seems wasteful.

Like most of us, Bill travels with a near empty tank to reduce weight. So if he arrives at park where he plans to stay and they have well water, he drops a half teaspoon per 100 gallons of the concentrate into the fill tube and fills his water tank. This insures the system will always be sanitized. No, you do not have to flush again. It's the equivalent to drinking chlorinated city water. If you are filling your tank from a source that is already chlorinated then you don't need to add the concentrate.

That said, if you don't like to drink chlorinated water, don't add the concentrate to the water you intend to drink. Assuming, you fill your water tank from a trusted source you should be safe. Or, you can add the concentrate and then filter the water you drink or cook with.

Truth is I almost always seem to be filling the fresh water tank from a chlorinated source (city water supply) so I seldom need to to use the concentrate. And we do filter our drinking water.

This is not a case where more is better. This stuff is concentrated and it's best to use just what Bill recommends.

Because Sodium Dichlor is so highly concentrated you only need to carry a very small container... buy the smallest container available. And it is dry crystals so there is less chance of a spill. However, because it is so concentrated it is highly corrosive so you do have to be careful how you store it and use it. You should be able to find Sodium Dichlor (Chlorinating Concentrate) at any pool supplies or spa store. Bill says there are several brands to choose from but brand should not be a factor in your choice... it's all the same stuff.

Just one little thought to add to this. Please be very careful when handling concentrated chemicals like this. They can be extremely toxic and you should always wear gloves in case of contact with the skin. If you do get chemicals on the skin, please flush well with water.

I'll have to remember to get it sodium dichlor when I go to get the fresh supplies for the pool this year. But I will do all the flush of the system once it stops with the white stuff again outside.
