Before you read this..please understand this is not in any way meant to be a deterent to camping. Bears are everywhere. Most campers practice good common sense when it comes to bear proofing their campsites and staying alert while camping in areas that bears frequent. Many of the incidents in this list showed a blatant lack of common sense and a disregard for safety precautions. When you think about it, the number of fatal bear attacks in the United States is rare compared to the number of campers, hikers and outdoor activity participants that are out there in the wild every day somewhere across the U.S. Nevertheless, I will post this. At the bottom you can read through the individual incidents , and how and why they happened. Some of the most disheartening were a 5 month old baby set in a stroller outsider her vacation home. Another a 6 year old boy walking near a dump with his family. Another a group of young children out picking wild flowers. Here is the link to the site, list of causes/events are near the bottom of the page.
