Hey Guys:

RBfromHPA is picking up his first 26' Hardshell camper today...

It is a 26' Dutchman... And he is worried about backing it up...

He claims he should be known on here as 'Jack Knife' since that is what he always did with his pop up...

I told him that the bigger they are, the easier they are to back up...

He didnt seem to find much comfort in that... lmao

One tip I did give him is how I have taught numerous people including 'WildFlower'...

WildFlower has now become an 'ACE' at backing trailers in...

TIP FROM RANGER :

When backing your trailer up if it gets out of line on you and you need to bring it back straight, simply look in your mirrors on the side of the truck. Which ever mirror you see the 'MOST' of your trailer in, turn your steering wheel towards that mirror... Easy enough to remember !

This will then bring the trailer to becoming straight again, and with a little practice you wont even have to stop and think about this little hint...

Hope this helps ! 2thumbs

GOOD LUCK RBfromHPA... Let us know how you do...
(we will be expecting pictures too ! dunno )

Anyone else have any tips for him or others...

Tom

its true, the longer they are, the easier to back up. it because they don't turn as fast.

u can just do what ranger does, and just close ur eyes. not sure how that works so well for him

The best way to learn how to back up a camper is to practice. When I was towing our first pop up, I stopped at the high school across the street and practiced backing into a parking space. Did the same thing with the Jayco.

Got pretty good with the pop up. Coming home from Ocean City, MD one time Kim wanted me to stop at a restaurant on 50 just west of the Bay Bridge. Pulled in, found 4 open spaces in the back of the parking lot, and parallel parked the rig in the spots. The driver delivering food there came over and told me he was impressed. Told him the secret was practice. He agreed and said he wished more people had that attitude.

the biggest thing that helps me is setting up the aproach to back in, pull past the desired spot far enough and when possible get the tow vehicle angled in the direction you want to be in to start backing up,don't sweat it and take your time.

That is the best way to line up for backing, pull past and set yourself up. Also follow the mirror advice, if heading left, turn left and then remember to get back under it or you will be going to the right soon LOL.

Also need to add the idea of practice, practice, practice and then practice is the best way to get good!

I am usually the one towing the pop-up to camp and setting up. The yearly maiden voyage is usually the most challenging for me. Last year I got a compliment from the folks in the next site... "Now there's a girl who knows what she's doing." LOL

Guys remember this...if the wife (girlfriend, whatever) is backing up the trailer, having you there yelling which direction she should be going doesn't help one bit and is only going to result in both parties being pizzed off. Rick gets irritated when I don't put the windows down so I can hear what he's saying. He's best to just let me do it on my own. A lot less frustrating for everyone involved.

I agree with the side mirrors thing. I don't look through the back window at all. I only use my side mirrors and do quite well if I must say so myself.

I just want to say thank you for sharing that tips on how to back up a trailer. I have heard much information on how to do this. And it's a good idea to have something that will help direct you and alert you when you're approaching an object.
