| Keep
it clean!... If you're going to cook over an open fire, rub liquid soap on the outside of pots and pans. The black soot will come right off when you wash them. submitted by John G |
| Ice
is nice to drink... Freeze bottled water before you go. Use it to keep your cooler cold, and when it melts you have good tasting water to drink. submitted by John G |
| Hang
it up!... Hang one of those cheap shower caddies from a tree, near the picnic table. Use it to store dish liquid, scrubbers, dishcloths, and communal items like tooth paste. submitted by gould/girard |
| In
case they don't keep going and going and going... If you use battery powered equipment on camping trips (i.e.: radios, flashlights, CD players, portable fans) make sure they all use the same type of battery. That way if the batteries in one go dead, you can swap batteries from another unit. Ever have a flash light go dead on you in the middle if the night and not have backup batteries?... submitted by niteflite |
| Oh,
my aching tooth!... Most people pack a first aid kit but never pack anything for a tooth ache. Nothing can spoil a camping trip faster than a cavity, a filling that falls out or a chipped tooth. submitted by niteflite |
| Have
a Tupperware Party... Use round Tupperware containers in the cooler especially if you use ice (that melts of course). Round containers won't unzip or pop like food storage bags plus are virtually air tight and liquid tight! Some of those containers are also great for putting a washcloth, tooth paste/brush and small hotel bar of soap in for bathroom runs! submitted by Debbie the Tupperware Lady |
| Keep it
Neat... Keep a compact broom and dustpan nearby to keep the tent clean inside while camping and a door mat on the outside. submitted by Debbie the Former Girlscout |
| Get Organized... Get a plastic tool box for all the extras; mantels for the lantern, twine, rope, hammer, etc. Use the large long Rubbermaid containers to pack gear in so your vehicle is less of a mess. submitted by Debbie |
| Fair Deal...
Did you know that many fairgrounds rent space in their off season for RV storage. submitted by Sandra Lee |
| Did we pack everything?... Store a master list of items to pack on your computer and just print it out when you need it. submitted by Mrs. Sweeney |
| O.J. on
Ice... Buy orange juice in plastic bags, freeze it, so it can be used instead of ice in the cooler. Then, when it thaws out you have more juice for later in the trip. submitted by SportMom |
| Hot buns... Use one of those pie irons to make refrigerator-type biscuits. Just butter each side of the biscuit, put it in the pie iron, then into the coals until done. You can also sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar before baking. submitted by SportMom |
| Popup
Privacy... If you have a pop up camper, you can hang curtains up at each bed for more privacy, and it is so easy... just find an appropriate size pair of curtains and hang them on stretchy rope. attached to eye hooks at each end of the bed. The great thing is, you can hang a sheet over the rope if you don't have curtains. submitted by CWhtdove |

Hot Tip... |
| Half-Baked Idea... To cut down on cooking time of baked potatoes, start the potatoes in your microwave (bake till about half cooked) before you leave. Wrap them in aluminum foil and toss in the cooler until needed. (The foil holds the heat in and continues to cook them too!) When ready to prepare potatoes with your meal, pull them out of your cooler and toss on the fire to re-heat. This cuts cooking time way down! submitted by SLS |
| Frozen Dogs... Pack some FROZEN ground meat or hot dogs (or both) in your cooler before you leave home. This will help keep your other food in the cooler cold, plus when they thaw (in a day or so) they will be ready to use! submitted by SLS |
| Mmmm,
Smells Good... Store your closed cooler with a paper towel dipped in vanilla (cooking vanilla) to keep it fresh and odor free! submitted by Debbie |
| Bag it... Bring your clean clothes to the shower in a plastic bag so that they don't get wet when you set them down on the floor. submitted by Sandra Lee |
|
No Nukes, No Way... I have a very small microwave that I take with me, and that heats my water for coffee or tea, and it is great to heat up water for washing up. It is also very convenient for baked (nuked) potatoes, and my favorite "microwave popcorn". submitted by CWhtdove |
| Is something Bugging you?... Are the bugs getting to you? Mix Avon's Skin-So-Soft with rubbing alcohol (roughly half and half) and put it in an empty pump spray bottle. submitted by M Anthony |
| Zip it up... Use those zip type storage bags for foods such as soup, sauces, chili, etc. Fill the bag with the food, freeze it and pack it in your cooler. (It will help keep the other items cold, too) Then just put the bag in hot water to heat through. submitted by Paul Adam Larkin |
| It's called First Aid for a reason... First Aid should always come first. Keep all of the necessities like adhesive bandages, aspirin, adhesive tape, alcohol swabs, antiseptic ointment, chemical heat & cold packs, gauze pads, cotton swabs, tweezers, scissors, sunscreen, etc. in a waterproof container. Also, don't forget your prescription medicines. After the trip is over, be sure to replace the items that you used. Before each trip check the expiration dates on all medicines and replace them as necessary. submitted by Sandra Lee |
